When moving from Pennsylvania to Seattle, we were choosing between Penske, ABF, and a full-service moving company. After reading the reviews online, we decided to go with a trailer from ABF. I’m glad we did!
For one, ABF was cheaper than Penske, which is just incredible, because ABF hauls it across the country for you (whereas you haul it yourself w/ Penske). It was quite freeing to have someone else drive our stuff cross-country - it allowed us to travel in our car at our own pace. And compared to a full-service moving company, ABF was significantly cheaper ($2500 cheaper). You can get some pretty cheap full-service quotes online, but I would not trust any of these companies unless you can be sure they’re legitimate.
Additionally, ABF’s customer service is very helpful. I called multiple times with various questions, and they had a helpful, accurate answer for every question.
As far as the move itself, everything went as expected. ABF has some good videos on their website which tell you everything you need to know. Of course the success of the move really depends upon how well the truck is packed, but if you do a careful job, you shouldn’t have any problems. Our stuff arrived with minimal damage, and any damage that did occur was due to our packing mistakes.
One nice thing about ABF is that they charge by length in feet of how much trailer space is used; and they adjust the price according to a fixed rate if you use more or less space. We used 2 feet less space than anticipated, and it saved us $300, which was pretty nice. Also, the drivers are good about giving you a favorable measurement. For example, we used 8.5 ft of space, but the driver only charged us for 8 ft of space (although he did try and charge us for 10 ft at first, which was kind of annoying).
The only negative experience we had was on our destination end. I had arranged to have our trailer dropped off around 5pm. I should note that we did not pay for a guaranteed delivery time, so 5pm was really just an estimate (they did promise me a 2 hour delivery window, for which I chose the time: 5-7pm). Nonetheless, our trailer was late, and did not arrive until 6:45pm. The people that came to help us move had to stand around for almost 2 hours waiting for the truck to arrive. The most annoying thing was that the person I spoke with at the terminal kept telling me the trailer was on its way, telling me it would be there around 5:30…and then 6…and then 6:30… And he also told me some story about the driver having a flat tire (and when the driver arrived, he said that he had not had a flat tire at all; things were just backed up at the ABF terminal). The truck did arrive within the two-hour window, I was just frustrated that I wasn’t getting an honest answer from the dispatcher at the ABF terminal.
All in all though, we had a great move with ABF, and would definitely recommend them! Also, here are some tips for anyone who does choose to use ABF (or any pack-it-yourself truck):
- heavy stuff at the front of the truck; fragile stuff on top (and use lots of bubble wrap for fragile items!)
- rent / buy furniture pads, and use them liberally
- use mattress bags (consider double-bagging)
- place tarps on the floor at the beginning, and on the top at the end to keep things covered (protect from water / road grime)
- rope is useful for securing things a bit more tightly
- a ladder is very handy for packing things up high (which you will want to do to minimize the space used in an ABF trailer)
- make sure to arrange for any necessary parking permits
- take time to relax and do something fun!
