After a hike in rent, my husband & I decided to look for greener pastures; we found a great condo 18 miles away. This would be our 1st move as a couple (read: 1st move of not my stuff or his stuff, but ALLLLL of OUR stuff!), and with a CRAMMED 800 sf apt, 1-car sized storage unit, plus items stored at mom’s, we debated back and forth over whether to hire movers or DIY as each of us had done individually in the past. Ultimately it came down to cutting cost, so we chose to bite the bullet, rent a DIY truck, and see how things went.

In the past I’ve rented only U-Haul trucks because they were the only reasonable DIY truck rental I was aware of and they had rental sites nearby. I’d only used them for very “small” jobs of 2-3 large furniture pieces, across town and back, over 4 hours. While they got the job done, I didn’t relish the memory of how “shaky” my last 2 trucks felt. I was a nervous wreck driving them b/c it felt like they were going to flip or fall apart at every other turn. This move would need an even bigger truck and a longer trip, so I did some research and decided to try Penske based on others’ reviews of how their trucks were in better condition and that the rates were comparable.

We found a Penske site near our old apt and scheduling over the phone was a breeze. I used their website calculator to plug in pieces of major furniture to decide what size truck to rent and ended up with a 16′. I scheduled to rent the truck for 24 hours hoping to need only 1 round trip to pick up and load various items, move them, then return the truck. The gentleman at our Penske office told me via phone that since I was renting on a Saturday afternoon, and our 24 hr period would be up after they closed the next day, we could technically bring the truck back anytime before start of business on MONDAY and not be charged for an extra day; he confirmed this on pickup. This worked to our advantage b/c our 1st load/unload took way more time & space than realized. We chose to do a 2nd run late Sunday morning & returned the truck Sunday evening; NO extra day charges appeared as promised.

Driving the truck was a LOT smoother/easier than with U-Haul! Our truck was clean, and felt mechanically safe & sound. I was cautious but did not feel any anxiety maneuvering around the tighter residential streets, or with moving up to speed on the highway.

My only “complaint” was that when the charges posted to my credit card they were confusing. I knew the ultimate total would be the rental per day plus mileage and a few other local fees/taxes. What we were ultimately charged WAS in line with what I had been quoted. However, it posted as 3-4 separate charges, then another 2-3 “Credits” were applied that brought the total back down. This was all automatic and listed in the same day, but there was no detail as to what the credits were for or how they calculated them. I did not call to enquire about them b/c the charge minus credits were technically correct, but if this is Penske’s usual way of doing things, it seems to allow more room for error, so check your statement juuust in case.

If we can afford it, we will probably use professional movers for our next BIG move to save exhaustion, but I’ll use Penske again and again for the simpler stuff.
