U-Haul

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with U-Haul, and for the most part I’ve always though they were mediocre, but my most recent moving experience affirmed my poorest opinion of them and I will never use them again.

I reserved a truck and tow bed for my car for a cross-state move recently. I made my reservations online and had a confirmation that I would receive the equipment I needed and on time.

On the day before the move, UHaul was supposed to call me to confirm my reservation. When I didn’t receive a call by noon, I tried to call them. They told me to call back in a couple of hours. I called back again and got the same response. I finally had to call around 4:30, 1/2 an hour before the distribution center closed, and in an annoyed voice, the woman on the other line gave me my pick-up location — a full 10 miles away from my home (meanwhile, there is a U-Haul 2 miles away from me).

When I arrived at the pick-up location, they told me they did not have a tow bed for me at that time, but that I should go and load up the truck and come back later to pick up the tow bed. Fine. I went back to my apartment, moved my stuff out, and then called back UHaul. They told me there was no tow bed available (flatbed, all car wheels are raised), but there were tow dollies (front 2 wheels are raised). Not what I wanted, not what I reserved, but fine, I accepted it. The woman sent me to 3 different locations — the first did not have them (when they had originally said they did), the second would not put my car on the tow dolly because they had old ones that would not work with my car appropriately, and the third closed even though I had been 5 minutes away from the place when it closed.

Having to get out that evening, I managed to find a friend who took care of my car while I drove to my new location. I ended up having to get a train ticket ($100) to come *back* and pick up my car and drive it down.

What got me even more furious was that 1) U-Haul tried to charge me for the extra miles I had driven to look for a tow dolly for my car (which I never ended up getting), and 2) Their customer service reps were absolutely the most rude, inconsiderate and unprofessional people I have EVER dealt with. There is a U-Haul down the street from me, and I will NEVER use them again.

The *only* redeeming thing about them is that when I finally completed the move and returned the truck, the service manager to whom I handed off the keys gave me part of my fee back. He was the 1 person I found that truly understood the stress of a moving day and the importance of good customer service.
