Penske

After being married, two months, my wife and I planned a moved from DC to LA. We went with a 16 foot Penske truck because Penske had comparatively been the least expensive. However, had we known what we were getting into we wouuld have paid any other price.

The second morning of our journey we went out to the truck to find cockroaches crawling in the cab of the truck. Disgusted we cleared out what we saw and sprayed some garden spray given to us by family where we were staying. We called and talked to Penske who told us just to wait and see if there was anymore problems. Unfortunately, the Penske cockroach problem only got worse. We were planning to drive into that night as we were on a time crunch but once it got dark the cockroaches really started to come out. After filling up for gas and using the restroom we came out to find them crawling all over the seats. My new wife in tears we tried to work out something with Penske but were told there was not much they could do. We tried to drive farther but we felt utterly disgusted. We could not even lean on the seat backs or place any of our stuff on the floor without worrying about cockroaches so we were forced to stop prematurely. We found a hotel and a walmart and bought roach spray and traps. Before going to bed we sprayed and baited the roaches.

The next morning we came out to find 30 dead cockroaches in the cab. On the emotional breaking point we called Penske but were told by a Penske representative that we could maybe switch out the truck but we would have to pay the costs. We told them we couldn’t pay for another truck and Penske said then we would have to wait until LA. This day was just as bad with the cockroaches scuttling here and there in the day but then really emerging at night. Penske customer service hung up on my crying wife and the district manager said that we must have brought them in.

After calling and documenting our travels every day we were finally told in Nebraska that Penske could swap our truck for free if we would drive 2 HOURS out of our way to Denver to make a swap. Frustrated at the very suggestion that we alter our course for Penske to fix the infestation my wife called her parents. It was not until my new father-in-law final called Penske that we got someone helpful (Emy) on the phone that said they would swap us out for free once we got to Utah (on our way) and that they would get movers to transfer the boxes. The Utah Penske crew was nice, helped us moved the boxes, while all the time we were praying that we would not have any cockroaches in the back. The Penske people in Utah saw the cockroaches and could not believed we were not helped before. They said they would not even ride in that truck for a minute. Unfortunately because we saw a couple of cockroaches in the transfer from one truck to another we knew we would have to laboriously inspect everything upon arrival before moving into our new place, lest we bring this problem home with us.

Once we got to California, we had friends and family help us open our boxes and containers, do a careful search for cockroaches, and transfer the contents to new boxes that we could be sure no cockroaches had burrowed into. All in all we spent 36 man hours in this process.

When we tried to work things out with the Penske representatives in CA, we hoped to be treated better after going thought the most hellish week of our lives. Sadly, after all that we are forced to struggle with Penske to get compensation for our rental price.

While cockroach infestation in rental cabs may be a fluke thing, I am disappointed in Penske for not proactively, or at least cooperatively, taking care of such a problem once it has occurred.
