U-Haul

On Friday, September 19, 2008 my husband and I rented a 5×9 foot trailer for our move across the state of Virginia (106 miles away and through the Blue Ridge Mountains). Because we would be going through the mountains, we did EVERYTHING by the book, bought a brand new trailer hitch, ball, for the correct load weight, made sure our mini-van would be more than capable of pulling the fully loaded trailer, bought insurance protection, etc. We went so far as to have UHaul install the hitch and ball on our minivan. We were told we were covered 100% if anything happened. We thought we could sigh a sigh of relief. The trailer coming off while driving down the road was my worst nightmare.
The next day my daughter and I were on our way back to return the trailer to the rental place. Thankfully it was unloaded. At 7:30 in the morning, while accelerating from a interesection we were stopped at, the trailer began to swerve uncontrollably between the lanes whipping the back end of my minivan back and forth. I was able to nurse my minivan and trailer to the side of the road in the break down lane. We had just come down from the mountains. I got out, the ball had let loose from the trailer, the only thing keeping it attached to my minivan was the safety chains, which did their job. Luckily, I was only doing about 20mph. I called the rental place and they advised me to call the 1-800 number on the back of the trailer since we had all the insurance options and towing etc. I did and the first representive said I was indeed covered and she would dispatch a tow truck right away. She gave me a call id# and said they would call me in about 15 mins with a ETA of when the tow truck would arrive. I waited until 8:00 am no call. I called back, and got another rep. This one was rude and stated that I would never get approved for something that was “my fault”. She went on to state she needed to talk to her surpervisor. I asked what for??? And she would not answer me but hung up on me. I called my husband and told him and he called and spoke to her supervisor and they refused to send the tow truck out to my location! They told him I was “on my own” and that the insurance doesnot cover something that was “our fault”. We were confused at what was our fault, as the UHaul rep hooked up our ball and hitch! But that didn’t matter. I then called and got the same story. The supervisor then said that if we didn’t return the trailer immediately that they would repossess our minivan even though our rental wasn’t due until 7pm that night. He went on to state that Uhaul would place a lein on our vehicle and repossess it. At this point it was 10:00 am and now my van battery was going dead for leaving my flashers on for so long. The supervisor then told me that he “would do me a favor and dispatch a tow truck to my location” but at my EXPENSE! It didn’t matter that we paid for the towing insurance when we took the rental. The tow truck was going to cost me 350.00. We thought we were covered. I looked through the small print of the uhaul contract and all the pamplets that we recieved and it did not state anything about not being covered for anything like this. Don’t they have to do a FULL DISCLOSURE???? I called back the supervisor and he told me it was NOT disclosed but that “wasn’t his problem as he wasn’t the one stuck on the side of the road.” My husband and I both agreed that he would start to head my way with a new ball so I could get the darn thing back to the rental place. It was going to take him about 3 hours to get to me and he would not beable to help me and he would not be able to rehook up the trailer as he is wheelchair bound from a major spinal cord injury. I was truly on my own with my 13 year old daughter. I couldn’t afford the tow truck either so I had no choice. This was 11:00am.
About 15 mins later a sheriff deputy pulled up along side of my car and we spoke a few mins about the dilemna I was in. I explained to him about what I was going through with Uhaul and he said he had heard the same story over and over and Uhaul roadside service had a very bad reputation. In his opinion they were responsible as I purchased all the extras to be covered. He then left, only to return about 30 mins later with a new ball. He told the local auto parts store my dilemna and they donated the new ball. He then rehooked up my trailer and I was able to return the trailer to the Uhaul place before 7 pm. THANK YOU TO GREENE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPT!!!!!!
I am still fighting with Uhaul. There was no damage to the trailer but my van suffered damage to the exhaust system, a dent in the bumper and a dent to my spare tire. I am making a complaint to the Attorney General’s Office, Better Business Bureau and whomever else I can find regarding their “insurance coverage” protection. It’s all a scam and doesn’t cover anything but their equipment-no matter what they tell you. CONSUMER BEWARE!!!!
