ABF U-Pack Moving

My mother-in-law was moving from CA to TN, and we were arranging the shipping of the last of her stuff after she had already left. The ABF folks I dealt with were all very nice and professional and interested in helping make the experience positive.

The quote can be generated online or via telephone and emailed to you. You then confirm the quote and set up a reservation to have the cube delivered. You load up the cube, then call again to have it picked up. At the other end, they will cal (or you can call them) to schedule an appointment to drop it off.

I looked at PODS, but it was more expensive, and they would not have been able to deliver it to the door at the other end.

The process was very smooth. Everything was on-time. Everyone was polite and friendly and knowledgeable. The cube arrived at the destination with only one casualty - a chair ended up with a broken spindle in the back.

Things to remember:

1. You supply your own padlocks for the cube. My cube needed TWO locks - one for each door.

2. You supply ALL packing supplies, including ropes, furniture pads, etc. I think you can buy them from ABF, but you have to make that arrangement.

3. The cube is unloaded from the truck via a fork lift, which requires a firm surface to operate. If you’ve got a gravel driveway, for instance, the forklift may not be able to work properly, which may limit where your cube can be dropped.

4. The dimensions for my cube were rounded up to the nearest foot. So, it was quoted as 6′x7′x8′, but the interior was actually more like 5.5′x6.5′x7.5′, or slightly bigger. Anyway, a few inches smaller than what the specs say.

5. The cube is completely bare on the inside. No shelves or anything like that, so you’re stacking your stuff almost 8 feet high. That’s potentially a lot of weight on the stuff on the bottom. I used a few 2×4s and some plywood to make a make-shift shelf about 4 ft. high to separate the load a bit.

6. There are a whole bunch of slots on the walls of the cube (for hooks and/or shelves or something), but no “real” tie-downs. It was not super-easy to thread a rope through those slots. If I were doing it again, I’d ask about how they recommend using ropes in there. Maybe they have special hooks to use in those slots.
